Network of Women in Business Announces 2009 Award Winners
Businesswoman of the Year, Mentor of the Year and Woman to Watch Named at Annual Gala
(Indianapolis, IN September 25, 2009) - The Network of Women in Business, Indianapolis’ oldest and largest locally based women’s organization, is pleased to announce the recipients of their prestigious 2009 Businesswoman of the Year, Mentor of the Year and Woman to Watch Awards.
Dr. Sally Brown Bassett, CEO of Ambassadors for Children, was named the 2009 Businesswoman of the Year; Karen Mangia, Senior Manager of Partner Experience, Cisco, was named 2009 Mentor of the Year; and Raquel Richardson, Founder of Silver Square, was named Woman to Watch. The awards were bestowed on Thursday, September 17th at the Network of Women in Business 30th Anniversary Gala Luncheon, Defining Moments, held at the Omni Severin Hotel in downtown Indianapolis.
Businesswoman of the Year recognizes an exceptional woman who has achieved prominence and success in the business community and owns, founded or is currently involved in running the business. She demonstrates leadership within the organization and shows accomplishment and evidence of “needle-moving,” obstacles overcome, innovations or discoveries made, and is an active member of her community.
Dr. Sally Brown Bassett, former president and CEO of the largest travel club in the United States, followed her vision to combine travel with serving others and founded Ambassadors for Children in 1998. Ambassadors for Children is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting peace and understanding through face to face cultural exchange opportunities. Since its conception, AFC has operated hundreds of humanitarian trips all over the world serving thousands of children and donating approximately 5 million dollars in aid. An Honorary Board of Governors was formed with a diverse membership including doctors, educators, travel experts, media specialists, and representatives from the business and non-profit sector.
Mentor of the Year recognizes an outstanding woman who has served as a guiding light for another professional woman, who has demonstrated positive influence over the careers of others, and who offers experience, guidance and coaching to serve as a role model.
